How to renovate a bathroom?

The bathroom is a very intimate ambience, perhaps the most personal of the whole house. For this reason, in the refurbishment phase, the choice of finishes and furnishings must be made according to your own needs and tastes. It's certainly not the simplest room to decorate but is definitely the one that will give you more satisfaction at the end! Before you get excited about choosing the bathroom cabinet or decide whether and where to use mosaics and tiles, a detailed analysis of the space to be restored has to be done.

Washbasins typologies

First of all, dimensions!

To minimize the risks, reduce costs and avoid unforeseen needs, the scale plan should be carefully studied: what size does the room have? Where the drains for the washbasin, toilet, shower, and bathtub are located? Knowing the ceiling height for example is crucial to choose the right shower cabin.

Consider that a basin is usually positioned at a height of 83-87 cm from the ground, while the minimum distance to be considered for WC and bidet is 120 cm.

Thankfully constraints and measures are not everything. Once those are defined here comes the fun, choosing materials and finishes.

From colour to furnishings

Colours are very important to set the mood of a space. Once you have established the palette that represents you best, then it’s time for complements and furnishings. Bathrooms are usually dominated by neutral tones: from white to cream, from gray to champagne.

The reason why? Because soft shades are more associated with a cleanliness and hygiene. Anyway this doesn’t mean that you have to give up colours! You can add an extra touch by choosing a mirror with a colorful frame, a washbasin or a beautifully coloured furniture like in blue or green, as well as decorative curtains or just a bath mat matching a set of coloured towels.

Even bidets and washbasins do not have to be white, they are available in so many colours!

What's the budget?

How much would it cost to make up your bathroom? There a lot of variables depending on different stages of the process: implants, masonry and eventually the finishes.

What may seem like saving money in the immediate future could become a waste in the long run. Faucets, sanitary fixtures, showers and bathtubs must last for years; quality should be the first choice, not price.

Trust the experts, ask for manufacturer’s certifications and guarantees, read the technical data sheets, and observe the maintenance instructions.

Even if your budget is limited you can refresh an old bathroom containing the costs. Sometimes it’s enough to take a few steps like replacing an old towel rail, a storage cabinet, taps, a lamp, a medicine door or a more stylish wall mirror. It is also possible to renew the shower simply by replacing the shower head with a more high-tech model.

Other low cost ideas: add personal items to the bathroom making it like an extension of the living area. Plants, paintings, photographs, candles and carpets can really transform the space and make it more personal and cosy.
